What Are You Gaining from Your Rollercoaster Weight-Loss?
This is a startling question for most people. Their first response is, “What do you mean? I’m not gaining anything! I’m suffering from this!” I want to share the following….
One of my clients, Sarah, came to me for help in dealing with her weight-loss issues. She’s an intelligent, sensitive woman in her mid 40’s. She had tried everything over the past 12 years to lose the 35 extra pounds she lugs around with her.
The “losing” part wasn’t the problem – she often managed to lose significant amounts of weight periodically at weight-loss programs, popping magic pills, Overeaters Anonymous, you name it. But…. she would inevitably gain it back, and then some. Sounds familiar?
As the saying goes, “There’s a diet born every minute.” Yup, though there’s no lack of dieting options, weight-loss success stories nevertheless seem like a pipe dream for many people. Why is that? Hint: The answer doesn’t have anything to do with “lack of will-power.” Let’s look at Sarah’s “stuff”, which surfaced during our first EFT session:
- Emotionally detached mother / critical father
- Bad marriage for 10 years
- Low self esteem/poor self-image since childhood
After some detective work, we discovered that Sarah had plenty to gain from not releasing her weight issues:
- She had the perfect “suit of armor” to protect her from entering into another relationship, which she was petrified to attempt again.
- She had never really had her emotional needs met, and overeating had somehow eased her feelings of deprivation, masquerading as the love she never received.
- Did she really deserve to be thin? She didn’t think so. She didn’t think she “had what it takes” to keep her weight off.
When you are weighed down by so many negative emotions, you’re inevitably weighed down physically as well. Once we organized all these hidden triggers, we were on our way!
So ask yourself, “What am I gaining from this destructive behavior?” You’ll probably be in for a surprise. Of course, it’s not always easy to do your own digging…(even EFT practitioners like to work with each other)…Subscribe to my Timber! Newsletter and learn some of the “tricks of the trade”? I’m also here to “dig” with you – just give a holler.
